So let’s get right to it, where internet marketing really begins — keyword strategy.

Don’t Make These 4 Keyword Strategy Mistakes

1) Write off keyword strategy altogether.

In the aftermath of Google’s “not-provided” keyword data, it might be tempting to write off keyword strategy altogether. After all, with all keyword searches encrypted, you can no longer see which keyword terms work best at converting visitors to your site. Plus, Google eliminated its free Keyword Tool for researching keyword search data.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of other ways to conduct keyword research, from Google AdWords Keyword Planner to Google Trends. It’s just a matter of doing what we tend to resist the most — adapting to a new way of doing things.

2) Best-guess your keywords.

Granted, you know your business and its products or services better than anyone. What you don’t instinctively know is how your potential customers or clients are searching for you.

Certainly, your best guesses are a great place to start, but put them to the test. Run your keyword ideas through your research tools (referenced above) to see just how many people are actually using these terms. Pay special attention to “related” keyword searches that may give you new ideas. Another great resource for keyword research is social media. How is your target audience talking about products or services like yours? What questions or concerns do they have that your products or services can solve?

3) Keyword stuff your content.

This has been a big no-no for a while now, but it’s worth a good reminder here, especially in light of Google’s Hummingbird algorithm. Google is smarter than ever. It doesn’t need (or want) excessive keyword repetition to determine what your page is about.

You still want to use your core keyword terms in your content, of course, just do so naturally. The key is supplementing them with related keyword terms, and even synonyms, throughout your text.

4) Neglect keywords once you’re ranking for them.

Let’s say you do all your keyword research right, then create killer content that boosts you to the top of search results. Celebrate this accomplishment, but do so in light of the fact that SEO is never “done,” keyword strategy included.

Once you’re ranking well for a keyword term, don’t rest on your laurels. Keep creating quality content, as you can be sure that’s what your competitors are doing in hopes of taking your spot.
