Google gave business owners a gift this week: a better suspension appeal process.
We spend a lot of time talking about Google’s updates. Sometimes we love them. Sometimes… not so much.
This week, though? Let’s give credit where credit is due.

Google made one small change to the Google Business Profile suspensions process that should make life a little easier for business owners everywhere.
If you’ve ever had your Google Business Profile suspended, you know how painful the appeals process can be. The suspension is bad enough. The paperwork? Even worse.
Thankfully, Google fixed one of the most frustrating parts, and for that, we’re grateful.
What’s New?
Until recently, the process looked like this:
❌ Submit your appeal.
❌ Wait for Google’s response.
❌ Upload all of your supporting documentation within 60 minutes.
Miss the deadline?
You were often starting over.
Now, you can upload your documentation when you submit your appeal.
Simple.

Don’t Celebrate Too Much…
This is a great improvement, but let’s not lose sight of the real goal.
The best suspension appeal is the one you never have to file.
While suspensions do happen, most are caused by the same handful of mistakes. The good news is they’re also some of the easiest to avoid.
🚫 1. Keyword Stuffing Your Business Name
If your business is called Smith Plumbing, don’t rename it:
“Smith Plumbing | Emergency Plumbing | Water Heater Repair | Drain Cleaning“
Google knows exactly what you’re trying to do.
And honestly, so do your customers.

A business name packed with keywords looks spammy, creates confusion, and can hurt your credibility before someone even clicks on your profile.
📍 2. Using an Address That Doesn’t Qualify
Virtual offices.
P.O. Boxes.
Addresses that don’t meet Google’s guidelines.
Google is paying attention.
If your address doesn’t qualify, your profile could disappear overnight. Don’t have a brick and mortar location that’s open to the public? Follow these guidelines to set up a service area instead.
✏️ 3. Making Too Many Changes at Once
Changing your business name, category, address, phone number, and website all at the same time?
To Google, that can look suspicious.

If you need to make updates, do them thoughtfully once, and then make sure your business information stays consistent everywhere it appears online. Similar best practices apply to Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing, and other online directories. The exceptions to the rule about not making too many changes, of course, are posts and reviews. Weekly posts on Google Business Profile increase brand exposure and boost your profile’s visibility in local search results. And the more reviews you receive and respond to, the better the profile will rank with both Google and AI results. Keeping the business information accurate and up-to-date across all of them is one of the easiest ways to make Google, AI, and other search engines recommend your business. Now, keeping all these profiles verified and consistent is a task easiest achieved through a local listings management tool, or using an agency with access to one. But if you’re taking a DIY approach to your local SEO, we recommend focusing on Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp, Facebook/Instagram, and any niche platforms that suit your business type, such as NextDoor and Houzz for home service providers, or LinkedIn for B2B marketing.
