Getting Familiar With the New Facebook Insights

Considering all the time and effort you put into your Facebook page for your business (or should be), it’s well worth familiarizing yourself with Facebook Insights. This not only helps you track your progress, but also helps identify when and what works best for posting to your page. While Facebook’s new breakdown of anlaytics offers more numbers and graphs to track, it’s easy to navigate via six Insights tabs.

OVERVIEW TAB

When you click on Facebook Insights from your Page admin area, the first thing you’ll see is an overview of activity — a snapshot of what’s going on in key areas of your Facebook Insights over the past 7 days:

Page Likes – Total Likes and New Likes, including percentage up or down from the previous week.

Post Reach – Total Reach and Post Reach, including percentage up or down from the previous week.

Engagement

Number of people engaged, including pecentage up or down from the previous week:

  • Number of likes
  • Number of comments
  • Number of shares
  • Post clicks
  • Most Recent Posts
  • Date published
  • Snippet of the post
  • Type of post
  • Targeted audience (i.e., public or private)
  • Number reached by the post
  • Number engaged with the post

LIKES TAB

After clicking on the Likes tab, select the dates you want to analyze (top right corner, under the tabs navigation). You’ll see the results in three graphs displayed on the page giving you a visual of how likes have risen and/or fallen over the selected time period.

Hover over any one of these graphs for detailed daily information:

  • Total Page Likes – How many likes you had on any given day.
  • Net Likes: What Changed – How many net likes, daily likes (organic or paid), and unlikes you had on any given day.
  • Where Your Page Likes Came From – Breakdown of whether your Likes came from being On Your Page, Page Suggestions, Ads and Sponsored Stories, Mobile, or Other.

REACH TAB

After clicking on the Reach tab, select the dates you want to analyze (top right corner, under the tabs navigation). You’ll see the results in four graphs displayed on the page giving you a visual of how your reach has risen and/or fallen over the selected time period.

Hover over any one of these graphs for detailed daily information:

  • Post Reach – How many people were reached by your posts on any given day, broken down by organic or paid.
  • Likes, Comments, and Shares – How many Likes, Comments, and Shares your posts received on any given day.
  • Hide, Report as Spam, and Unlikes – How many people hid your post, hid all over your posts, reported a post as spam, or unliked your page on any given day.
  • Total Reach – How many people saw any activity on your page on any given day, broken down by organic and paid.

VISITS TAB

After clicking on the Visits tab, select the dates you want to analyze (top right corner, under the tabs navigation). You’ll see the results in thre graphs displayed on the page giving you a visual of how your visits have risen and/or fallen over the selected time period.

Hover over any one of these graphs for detailed daily information:

  • Page and Tab Visits – Number of times your Timeline and each of your Page tabs was viewed on any given day, including the Photos Tab, Info Tab, Admin Tab, and others.
  • Other Page Activity – Number of mentions, posts by other people on your page, check-ins, and offers purchased on any given day.
  • External Referrers – Where visitors came from on any given day.

POSTS TAB

There are no dates to select in the Posts tab. It automatically provides the following information that you can use to tweak your posting format, content, and schedule.

  • When Your Fans Are Online – When your fans were online on any given day during the past week.
  • Post Types – Average reach of different types of posts, including Status Update posts, Photo posts, and Link posts.
  • All Posts Published – Same breakdown of information as Most Recent Posts displayed via the Overview tab (date published, snippet of the post, type of post, targeted audience, number reached by the post, number engaged with the post.

PEOPLE TAB

There are no dates to select in the People tab. It automatically provides you with the following information that you can use to better target posts to your fans based on their gender, age, location, and language spoken.

  • Your Fans – Breakdown of your fans by gender, age, location, and language spoken.
  • People Reached – Breakdown of people reached by gender, age, location, and language spoken.
  • People Engaged – Breakdown of people engaged by gender, age, location, and language spoken.
  • Check-Ins – Breakdown of check-ins by gender, age, location, and language spoken.

To make the most of this information, consider designating one day a week to review your Facebook Insights. This way you’ll more quickly and easily be able to identify patterns of success so that you can do more of what’s working and less of what’s not.
